The passages which are described by Benjamin as the most important architectural form of the 19th century, give important clues about the modern urban life. During the modernization process of Istanbul, Beyoğlu (former name: Pera) has become a part of the city where urban planning in accordance with the requirements of modern life. During this period, Beyoğlu has become the place of an urban life reflecting the life of the new society with its passages and elegant stores, where cultural activities such as theater and cinema emerged for the first time.
CONCEPT
Beyoğlu passages were built in the 19th and 20th centuries and formed passages within the dense texture of the city. These created passageways have created new perspectives and experiences and become an important memory space for the city. When Odakule was added to this texture in the 1970s, it created a passage on the ground between İstiklal and Meşrutiyet Street, as did the Bon Marche store on this plot and later the Karlman Passage. Reflecting the identity of its period on Istiklal, the building is an important structure of the street built in a modern style, creating an important urban space by creating different spatial experiences in the passage and pulling itself back from both streets.
In the design of the project, a contemporary space was created by interpreting the concept of the passage as an urban space described above and recognizing the historical character of the city, which respects the identity architecture of Odakule.
-
First, it was focused on how to evaluate the spaces of the passage with different characters. These are; The space between Istiklal street and the building,
-
A more sheltered outdoor space behind the space,
-
Lighting units on the ceiling that enliven the passage
-
The covered space left between Meşrutiyet Street and the building.
Secondly, considering the diverse user profile of Beyoğlu, the passage has been strengthened with new
activities available to all citizens. Beyoğlu is the center of artistic production with its galleries, theaters
and cinemas. In the project, the importance of the relationship between industry and technology was
revealed by presenting a free production area for art to the city.
